Naples Inter-railers

So we’ve received a banging email from Timo again, sharing more of his runners he’s caught by people visiting the city. Here’s what he had to say…

    Napoli part 2

During my years benching in Napoli, I have seen panels by most of the well known train writers from all over the world, many of them seemed to have stopped off here and painted steel at some point. There have been 3 main lines for benching, they are the Circumvesuviana, the Cumana, and the Line 2 metro. All have been bombed to some degree and it seems to change over different time periods as to which is most hit.
Here is a good selection of interrailers panels I have been lucky enough to capture.

Naples Steel

So I met Timo a while back after being introduced by Shady, from what I Shady told me was the man is one hardcore bencher! Something you really do not hear of in Britain but in the Naples it’s a whole new story, because of how many great photographs he’s sent us I’ll upload a few each day.

Here’s what Timo has to say…

An Englishman in Naples…

I was on holiday in Sorrento during the summer of 2005, during which time I planned a day trip to Rome. The wife wanted to see the colosseum and things, but me, I wanted to see the famous Rome metro that was running like NYC 1980 style. As the bus pulled away from our hotel to start our journey, we drove through some Sorrento backstreets where we passed a bridge. What caught my eye then, was a battered old red and white train, end to end in colour pieces. Here I was, on a 3 hour bus trip to Rome to see painted trains and all the time it was on my doorstep. Needless to say, the rest of the holiday was spent with me nipping up to the station to get photos. From this first holiday, I dont know why, but something gripped me about Naples and its graffiti scene, great food and wine and plenty of sun and funky train pieces, it all seduced me and still does to this day.
I have been visiting every year since, as many times as our budget will allow, (Thanks to a great wife), but its not been all plain sailing as i’ve been arrested and questioned about all the photos on the camera asking if im a writter etc, I’ve also been approached for gay sex twice…must have been stood too close to the toilets on the station lol.

Here are some of the main writers and crews panels that I’ve been privileged enough to photograph over the past 7 years, I will be back in 2013 for more of the same hopefully.
Big respect to all Naples writers who have put themselves on the line to paint steel over the years.

Five of the best – Delete08

Planning weddings, and being very busy at work, is playing havok with my spare time, so updating blogs etc and getting out and about has been a rare event recently, hence the lack of activity from my end on here recently, so apologies.  So with a spare hour on my hands, I’ve have time to address the balance somewhat. Here’s the latest offering from our feature about graffiti photographers called Five Of The Best. Recently we chatted with Delete08.

Name: Delete
Location: London based but getting out to France, USA, Spain, Italy as often as I can afford it.

Funeral - Portland Oregon

Years snapping graff: Been taking pictures on and off since the mid-80′s but took a very long break until decent affordable digital cameras started to appear on the market around 2005 and then haven’t had a day off since! Started posting to Flickr in 2008 (which is why some people call me Delete08). I’m particularly interested in tracksides, edgelands and the out of reach plots that push you to climb one just more wall – and then just one more – to get the shot you want. I love the way graffiti can take you to places in the middle of a crowded city that very few people even realise exist.

LG - Hackney London

Equipment: I take most of my pictures with an old Panasonic G1. It’s small and light enough so it doesn’t get in the way when climbing fences and in the dark it just seems to suck the light in. But as the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you – so sometimes it’s my phone.

Snoe Seks Skya - East London

When I looked back through my pictures to chose these I realised that pretty much 99% of the graff in them is gone now – even stuff I shot last week has either been buffed, dogged or burned – and that is one of the reasons I do this. I think it’s vital that walls are constantly changing but at the same time it’s great to have a record somewhere of all all that skill and creativity (and sometimes just the bottle).

Metro - Bordeaux France

Stage2 - Ilford London

STEAM156 in ‘Five of the best’ – (5 questions and five pics)

We would like to show our support for the real graffiti archivers who have been doing their thing long before the recent surge of phoney graffiti photographers hit the scene. The West Midlands seem to have a particular problem with them. This new breed of snappers seem to show little or no respect towards the scene and the people that provide them with their picture opportunities, posting face pictures onto Youtube and other sites after being asked expressly not to, releasing postcode locations of illegal spots, and not having the common decency to ask before they shoot someone. The increased ease at which a photo can be taken and uploaded onto the web has done little good for the scene, even as far as to say it has put certain magazines out of business. We lost one of the UK’s best and favorite graff mags last year due to this. We’re running a series of features that, in our opinion, show our appreciation to the best snappers in the UK, and who we fully endorse. Love them or hate them, the toy snappers will pass by, jumping on the next cool bandwagon, while the hardcore will still be doing their thing 20 years from now. In this feature we let the pictures do all the talking…

Enviados De Satan
EDS means Satan’s Sent. It was founded in 1995, so in a month it’s gonna be 18 years old. The crew started in Alicante, south east Spain. The first members were INCA (also known as SEZ,CAIN and the Candyman), ICER, MEYA and LOGAN (Seville’s finest tattoo artist). Then, crew started to grow… till this year when EDS Familia crosses borders with two new English members: MAYO and MEZ; and one writer from South Africa called POLIZEI. We touch all styles, wild, semi-wild,charos…and our stamp is the ideas of the walls: fear, drugs, violence, horror… because that’s life! Fuck Walt Disney.
